Here’s how to make a pressed flower card
I wrote about how to make a pressed flower Christmas card for the Herb Society about ten years ago, but when I look back it looks somewhat dated! These days I believe in less is more!
Keep it simple
I love the mantra KISS – Keep It Simple Stupid, which apparently originated in the US military. So in the pic above, you can see that the cards I made recently have only two pressed items each. There is a leaf at the bottom with a single flower stem above. I pressed these Delphiniums, also known as Larkspur or Consolida from UK grown plants. Luckily I had bought a large quantity of stems from a grower, so had plenty of material available to experiment with. You can see more of these beautiful Delphiniums in the top image in my previous post on how to frame pressed flowers.
Keep your design simple and there will be less to to wrong!

How to make a pressed flower card – practical tips
- If you would like your cards to have a long life, for example as a memento, I recommend buying blank cards that are labelled acid free. This will help to preserve the natural colours.
- For the same reason avoid handling pressed flowers as much as possible as the natural oils from your fingers may mark them. I use plastic tweezers as they are gentler than metal.
- PVA is the glue to choose because it is acid free and dries clear – use it sparingly!
- You may lose the odd petal in making the cards but don’t worry! If you think it will be noticed, just stick them on nearby.
