Cedar Roses are Popular at this Time of Year
Cedar roses are the fruit of a Cedar tree and are very pretty when displayed on a wooden stem. But why would you want to give a wooden brown flower rather than a soft delicate one? I’m going to discuss a few reasons why, but first here’s a bit more about what exactly these are.
What is a Cedar Rose?
A cedar rose is not actually a flower but rather a the tip of a cone. It comes from a particular kind of conifer tree called the Himalayan Cedar which has the botanical name Cedrus deodara. The whole cone can be up to 13cm long but as it ripens it disintegrates to disperse the seed, leaving the hard tip. These tips look so much like a rose they often seem to be hand-carved, hence their alternative name of woodrose.
These cones are naturally brown and have been glued onto a 50cm long stick which makes them suitable to be displayed in a vase or inserted into a mixed dried flower bouquet.

Cedar Roses have a broader appeal
We sell a surprising amount of cedar rose bunches at this time of year and we notice that a higher proportion of recipients are male. We see women sending to men and men sending to men. Perhaps the very specific traditional meaning of a dozen red roses given from a man to a woman to symbolise love and passion doesn’t chime with so many people these days.
Cedar roses can be given to express appreciation and friendship as well as romance!
Great value for money
The cost of a bunch of nine cedar roses is the same as a small bunch of supermarket flowers. But unlike fresh roses, a bunch of cedar roses can be used in home decor for months at a time. Simply popped into a tall vase, they look particularly chic when used as part of a modern minimalist or neutral scheme.
Cedar Roses are environmentally friendly
Long lasting not only means value for money but also environmentally friendly. A bunch of cedar roses will last you months if not years, whereas you’ll be lucky if fresh ones last you a week.
Although the cedar rose bunches we sell are imported rather than UK-grown, fresh roses are too in February! At least these will give you more than a fleeting show!
